What effects did the eruption of Mt Vesuvius have on the town Pompeii?

Pompeii was decimated. I visited Pompeii and the people were perfectly preserved in the positions they died in. Like if they were in the fetal position or if they were sitting in their house. There were ruins left of course, the volcano perfectly preserved them, but the civilization was destroyed.
